Social Impact Assessment/Community Engagement/Social Management Planning

In 1995, the Government of Zambia began to privatize state-owned copper mines in the Copperbelt province. rePlan was retained by the government and the World Bank to prepare a Social Management Plan (SMP) to address the socio-economic impacts resulting from privatization. The SMP looked at the impact on livelihoods, home ownership and informal property occupation, infrastructure, health and welfare, education and training. rePlan assessed the historic social impacts of mining and privatization; identified key issues and responsibilities that the Government of Zambia had yet to address; and developed detailed management and mitigation proposals to deal with these issues.
