John is an experienced rural development planner, manager and innovator with 25 years of experience in French and English speaking Africa. He has a successful record of engaging local communities and government on land, resource and livelihood issues. John’s work encompasses land-based livelihoods and natural resource management, from planning to implementation, and encompasses a range of social, financial, technical and institutional issues. Recently, John has developed plans for livelihoods restoration and local economic development in connection with mining projects in Senegal and Tanzania. In Burkina Faso, he developed and managed implementation of an international best practice compliant livelihoods programme for people affected by the largest mine and largest private investment in the country. The plan systematically analyzed and addressed project impacts on local livelihoods, as well as constraints and opportunities for communities to benefit from the project. John has also been involved in land acquisition, resettlement, agriculture and biodiversity management projects in several African countries and Haiti. He speaks French fluently. John graduated with an MA.Sc. in Engineering from the University of British Columbia in 1980.
